Lip & Tongue Tie Release Surgery
Frenectomy Surgery for Infants, Children & Adults
A frenectomy is a simple procedure that can provide patients experiencing tongue tie with increased range of motion for the tongue, helping improve their ability to speak clearly and eat naturally.
Understanding Tongue Tie
Tongue tie, or ankyloglossia, is a hereditary condition where a short or thick lingual frenum (the membrane that connects the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth) restricts tongue movement.
While mild cases may go unnoticed, more severe restrictions can interfere with speaking, chewing, swallowing, tongue positioning, and oral hygiene. Over time, untreated tongue tie may lead to issues such as bite deformities.
Proper tongue function and positioning play a key role in the healthy development of the skull, jaw, and airway.
Understanding Lip Tie
The maxillary labial frenum connects the upper lip to the gums, just above the two front teeth. When this frenum is overly thick or extends too low, it can lead to shifting front teeth after orthodontic treatment, gum recession, or other oral health problems. A lip tie can also cause a noticeable gap that may cause cosmetic concerns.

Frenectomy for Tongue Tie
A tongue tie frenectomy is a quick and simple procedure that helps improve the movement of the tongue. It involves gently cutting the thin band of tissue (called the lingual frenum) under the tongue. This helps free up the tongue so it can move more easily. The treatment is safe for both children and adults and is usually done in just a few minutes. Most patients notice improvements in things like eating, speaking, or breastfeeding shortly after the procedure.
Frenectomy for Lip Tie
A lip tie frenectomy is a procedure that removes or loosens the tissue (called the labial frenum) that connects the upper lip to the gums. This treatment is usually done later in childhood or the teen years, especially if there's a gap between the front teeth that doesn’t close naturally. If needed, braces can help bring the teeth together, and the frenectomy may be done afterward to prevent the tissue from pulling the teeth apart again. Your Calgary dentist will guide you on the best time for treatment to make sure it supports your dental health and any orthodontic care you or your chilld may need.
